Greenhouse Gas Reporting According to the EPA
The EPA created the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program (GHGRP) to collect accurate and timely data essential for informing future climate policy decisions. This data helps the EPA, states and the public to better understand emissions from specific industries, emissions from individual facilities, factors that influence greenhouse gas emission rates and actions that facilities could take to reduce emissions.
These regulations require reporting for facilities that directly emit greenhouse gases. Reports must be submitted for facilities of a variety of source categories given that the facility has met the reporting threshold of 25,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) or more per year. Definitions of those source categories and relevant details can be found on the EPA’s website.
Metric tons of CO2e are calculated using the sum of constituents multiplied by an emission factor representing the global warming potential (GWP) for that material. CO2, Methane (CH4) and Nitrous oxide (N2O) are calculated for oil and gas production, processing and transmission segments. Other industries will report other emissions specific to that industry, which will have their own global warming potential.

These same calculations can also be used to determine your GHG intensity and methane intensity for Scope 1 calculations if preparing ESG reports.
