Gas Turbine Starter Upgrade and Facility Expansion
Client: Major Gas Midstream and Distribution Company
Challenge
A major midstream gas operator needed to install additional facilities to convert one of their compressors from a natural gas starting system to an electric starting system. The primary objectives of the upgrade were to improve startup reliability, reduce ongoing maintenance requirements and eliminate greenhouse gas emissions associated with startup operations.
The conversion also necessitated upgrades to the site’s electrical infrastructure, including the addition of backup power generation capacity, to support the increased load and ensure reliable operation of the electric starting system.
Solution
Altamira partnered with the client’s operations team to design and implement the required facility upgrades. Key project elements included:
- Design and installation of a new switchgear building
- Development of cable trays to support power and control wiring
- Relocation of an undersized fuel gas supply line for the generator
- Foundation design for the switchgear building and generator package
- Modification and relocation of facility access roads
To ensure accuracy and minimize field issues, Altamira used 3D laser scanning (LiDAR) to develop detailed engineering and construction drawings, including:
- Site layout and grading plans
- Equipment and pipe support locations
- Foundation design drawings
- Piping and isometric drawings
- Road relocation plans
Although not required under OSHA 1910.119 due to the facility’s classification under 49 CFR 192, the client elected to implement an additional level of safety oversight. Altamira conducted a Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) for the new facilities to support this proactive approach to process safety.
Results
The project was successfully constructed using Altamira’s design packages, with no major modifications required during construction. The upgraded facilities are now fully operational, delivering improved efficiency, reduced emissions and enhanced system reliability. Altamira’s performance on this project strengthened its long-term partnership with the client. Over the past five years, the client has continued to engage Altamira for engineering, drafting and regulatory compliance support across multiple facilities in Texas and Louisiana, expanding the scope of work as trust in the relationship has grown.
