Emissions Reduction and Gas Recovery for Pipeline Compressor Operations

Client: Major Midstream Natural Gas Utility and Pipeline Operator

Challenge

A major midstream natural gas utility and pipeline operator wanted to install a pilot facility to capture vented methane gas from their filter/separator, pig receivers, separators, relief valves and other blowdown valves at one of their mainline gas compressor stations. The captured gas is compressed and reinjected into the compressor suction line, reducing emissions, recovering vented gas and significantly lowering the facility’s environmental footprint.

Solution

Altamira partnered closely with the client’s operations team to design and integrate the new blowdown gas recovery facilities. This included engineering the piping system required to collect vented and blowdown natural gas and safely return it to the mainline compressors located at the site. Altamira also designed supporting civil infrastructure, including equipment foundations, an exhaust stack, pipe supports and building foundations.

To enhance design accuracy and constructability, our team leveraged 3D laser scanning to develop detailed project models and construction deliverables. These included plot plans, equipment layouts, pipe support locations, grading plans, foundation design drawings and piping and isometric drawings, as well as updates to the existing process and instrumentation (P&ID) drawings.

In addition, Altamira conducted a comprehensive Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) to evaluate potential risks and ensure the safe integration of the new facilities into ongoing operations.

Results

The client successfully implemented the pilot project, achieving measurable reductions in methane emissions at the compressor station. Building on this success, plans are underway to expand similar emission-reduction initiatives across additional facilities.

Through this effort, Altamira has established a strong, long-term partnership with the client, delivering high-quality engineering, drafting and regulatory compliance services. Over more than five years of collaboration, Altamira has earned the client’s trust and continues to support ongoing and future projects.
